So you want to make BDSM Gear
June 20 2012

Lately on fetlife I have been seeing alot of people talking about BDSM gear. The biggest issue I hear is the cost of our items. So I want to clarify a couple of things.

There is nothing wrong with fair competition and actually our industry needs it however, you need to realize before you complain of our prices, just exactly what it takes to run a business. We are not running this business out of our garage. Nor do we do this as a hobby. If you want to make bdsm/bondage items so be it. But remember as legitimate sellers we have the following cost which YOU do not incur.

1) We have staff, which means wages, medicare, social security, workers compensation.

2) We have a dedicated leather room, a dedicated paint room and a dedicated wood room. Our wood items are made from the highest quality wood, then cut, drilled, sanded, puttied, sanded again then off to the paint room, where it is stained and urethane, then back to the wood room, where it is sanded AGAIN, and back to the paint room. This happens three times before it even hits the leather shop, to be finished in either vinyl or leather and packaged.

3) In order to ensure the product gets to you we have to purchase packaging material.

4) We are PCI Certified. Every business that take credit cards (not via paypal but ACTUAL credit cards ) must be PCI Certified. Again this is an additional cost, along with PCI, you must have a secure certificate for your website, a host, and someone to build and maintain that website. I have seen post on fetlife where Dom/Dommes are complaining because no one will build/help maintain their website. Well this is reality, either learn it yourself or pay for someone to do it. Again an additional cost.

5) A *real* business has credit card cost, over head cost, equipment cost, insurance cost, advertising cost, the list goes on and on.

So my point? When complaining about the cost of an item whether it is from us or another competitor remember that we are a real business offering real service and not just working out of a garage or basement..

Which brings me to my next line of thought. We had this domme in PA, literally call and ask us how we make things, for they can make it cheaper (yes really) It was interesting to see the rise and fall of this business, for they proudly proclaimed that they sold stuff cheaper then us, yet stopped making items a few months back due to the cost of shipping, they couldn't find anyone to build/maintain the website (please learn it yourself or PAY) If you want to open a real business then don't call your competitors asking for information, that's just tacky and tasteless. You have to learn the way, go thru your bumps and bruises, just like the rest of us, there are no short cuts to success.

Pictures and wording - TAKE YOUR OWN CREATE YOUR OWN. We have filed Take Down notices, on some prominent business for stealing our pictures and wording, some of these business are still open, most of them have closed down. Do NOT steal other peoples work. We pay to have our pictures taken, we pay for models, the time, the energy. Again stealing others work, is tacky, tasteless and speaks alot about the character of the business owner.

When people ARE talking poorly about you, stay out of it. It happens, you will not please everyone. Recently, on fetlife, a thread was started about a company and the owners of the company jumped in to defend their selves. The owners stated to a potential customer on fetlife, a site filled with potential customers, "you are not too bright are you." When I read this I was shocked, as a business owner why would you say something like that to a potential customer and on a site FILLED with potential customers?? This business left a bad taste in my mouth and so what if people talk badly, it means they are talking and it means that people are going to your website. Good or bad, its still advertisement. So shut up.

Do not talk poorly about your competitors. One of our competitors talk poorly about everyone in the market, He is the best, He is the worlds biggest, on and on it goes. Numerous times I have seen him post on fetlife and he is ripping apart items that new people are trying to make and sell. Even the guest book on his website is full of "I bought from a competitor and it was crap." I think the guest book on his website surprises me most, for we have a guest book and there are a couple of hundred comments left and not ONE of my customers have ever talked poorly about our competitors, where as, most of his gust book consist of that kind of talk. Makes you wonder, if his guest book is even..real. But seriously, there is NO need to talk poorly of another, Monkey Dungeon sells nice items and I have even referred a customer to them for an oversized straight jacket. Extreme Restraint is a big site and again I have sent customers to them when I cannot help them. When you talk poorly about your competition it is a reflection of your confidence and self esteem in your business and I think, it reflects poorly on you.

Guess that is my rant thoughts for today on what it is like and some of the cost associated with running a business!
